The Green Hornet

Did you know they're making a Green Hornet movie? I guess Seth Rogen is going to be starring in it. Also Stephen Chow, which is pretty cool.

Anyways, This is my interpretation of the Green Hornet and Kato.
ps. this was for class, I'm not just a nerd.

I sort of really wish I had that outfit, its based on a Dior couture dealy that had different, more chartreuse colors. Also, I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to wear a sheer skirt.
I also recently came into possession of a totally sweet book of cars from the twenties and thirties. I've been itching to put the awesome reference to good use, and I'm glad it was able to come in handy here.

Okay, thats all for now. I have some thesis stuff to post (finally) but I have to tweak a couple things first, and I'm feeling lazy today. ALSO, be on the lookout for my pieces for Vinylmore 2, I've begun construction on them, and I'm pretty excited about how they're shaping up (I wish I was better at using modeling putty though, they're a little bit sloppy, but I guess since its my first time ever trying to use it its a little bit excusable? I'd never even made anything with sculpy ) So, yeah. The deadline is coming up very soon, so I had better get working on them a little harder.

Corporate Disco Fight Collab

Hey everyone! Here are a couple things from Fashion.

This was a collaboration with Nate Krasner
Our styles are a tiny bit different, but we work in a similar fashion, and I think in the end these came together nicely.
Its a magazine spread and a leave behind for the Louis Vuitton Spring 2009 rtw line.
I drew the ladies and came up with the colors and general compositions, Nate did the backgrounds and all the random office supplies, and helped me with coming up with all the more action-y and exciting poses. (on account of me being terrible at that)

These bitches are sticking it to the man hardcore through interpretive disco dance destruction!

Its my last semester here at MICA! I can't believe it, I had better hurry up and make some things that are cool, then maybe people will hire me. I'm taking a couple fun classes, but most of the work won't come until the second half of the semester, so maybe I will try out also posting some sketches and whatnot. We'll see.

Nasturtiums

Hi everyone! look what I did today! I really like it, it has pleasing colors, and the girl is wearing my favorite necklace. I don't know what made me decide to draw nasturtiums, but they are really pretty flowers, and I love the way their leaf-shape looks. You know me... girls and flowers, life as usual.

also, I really like when I sit down and do something from start to finish in a day, it makes me feel really accomplished. I think this is the first time I've done something just for myself in a while. I was doodling on the back of a wiifit warning handout thing, and then this happened. Unfortunately, I was originally sitting down to work on ideas for thesis, which, as you can see, didn't happen at all. I want to have a rough idea with sketches by the time the semester starts, and since right now, I only have vague ideas in my head, I've got a lot of work ahead of me.

Speaking of.. does anyone know when classes start again? I am hopeless when it comes to finding these sorts of things out.

I guess its after New Year's too. Did you all make resolutions? I didn't until yesterday, when I decided that this was going to be the year I teach myself to cook. Hopefully that will make it a little easier to eat healthy. I generally live on frozen food and peanut butter and jelly, and I am not entirely happy with this diet. I made stuffed peppers last night and they were pretty successful, so its a start.

Illustrated Book

These are all for the book I illustrated in Alan's class. I chose "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" which is a fun book, but in the end I got sick of it a little faster than I was hoping. Still, I like the way these turned out, I think I'm finally getting a handle on color, which is really, really exciting.

also, for thesis next semester, I am thinking about circuses. They seem pretty cool, and I want to try drawing animals again.

More Pattern stuff

Here are the rest of the patterns I made.
The final critique for them went well, I think. The guest was a little useless, and Whitney was just being nice and showing off like she does, so I still don't know where I stand on them. I mean, I kind of like doing them, but I don't know if theres really any point, when I'm just bumbling around for a semester trying to teach myself what people go to school for years to learn. meh.

I'm really happy with this one, Its Cinderella (I hope thats fairly obvious, though it really could be any commoner/princess transformation tale) I was just sort of doing it to have one more pattern before the end of the semester, and ended up knocking it out in one day. I think she just has a really pleasing shape, and I did that thing where I somehow manage to ink really nice smooth lines. so, yeah!

Hansel and Gretel, and the slightly more in-your-face holiday version below...

and finally, The Princess and the Pea. I just wanted to make some fun looking stripes, but it turns out, its really hard to make stacks of mattresses not look like cake, or towels, or lunchmeat or pillows. Oh well, I did the best I could, I think. And I'm happy with the Growth Chart I made, so thats good.

So, like I said before, I decided not to do papercuts for my thesis anymore. Things just weren't working out and I was getting frusterated to the point of wanting to just rip everything in half (never good) so I decided to still work with patterns and fairytales, but not have to worry about the paper, and just focus more on learning to make repeating patterns.

I think it would make a lovely shower curtain, also I want to line my coat with it :D

Odds and ends

This is the poster to go along with my rollergirl design. I like the way the colors look a lot. I think I am slowly learning about making colors look pretty. also I am learning about digital things, I like it a lot, but I sort of secretly feel like I am cheating even though I think it looks a lot better than when I try to mix colors and paint things (I feel like copping out and just going digital makes me like a fake artist or something. sigh.)

also, here is the second image to go with the Trojan Man redesign. It is fun but I think it could have turned out better.

Last papercuts

this is the last papercut I did for my thesis. Whitney still wants me to put some sort of tone on Bopeep and the sheep, but I just can't bring myself to do it. I can't think of anything that will look good :/ oh well....

Thesis vomit

Hey everyone.

I figured I should post a couple things from my thesis. I don't really have any solid pieces to show (except Bopeep, but I still have to scan her)
Everything in this post is cut paper, in case you can't tell, which you really can't in most of them (see my note at the end ofthe post...)
Okay, so first I was cutting these nests, but they looked really scary, so I redid them a couple times until they finally looked age appropriate and I was happy with them.

there were little animal figures that went with them, but I forgot to scan those, maybe another time.

these are the nests I'm happier with, unfortunately they didn't scan that great, I can't get the colors to look quite right.

this is the tile for the nest, but its a little sloppy, color wise. I like the pattern though!

Itsy Bitsy Spider thing. It'll have rain drops behind it, but I need to rework some of the pipes because it looks funny when it tiles.

also, I've decided to stop doing the papercuts for now. I got back from fall break and sat down in the studio and realised that I just absolutely hated what I've been doing. I want to focus on learning how to make patterns, and not have to worry about the paper shapes, and how to reproduce the images. Which is the biggest problem I've been having. Because none of the things I've done are flat, they don't tile well, and everything just looks really ugly. On their own they look really cute though.
Whitney was completely onboard with the idea, and I think its what she was trying to get me to realise all along, but I needed to do all this extra work to get to that point. So we'll see where this goes from now on.

Hi everyone, how are you?

Its getting cold, and that means things come in pumpkin flavoured variety again, which is very good for me, not so good for the pumpkins.
Yet again all I have to show is things from character development. You might be getting the impression that my thesis is actually nonexistant. you might be right! ha ha! oh man I hope not. Anyways, its mascot redesign over in B.Ralph's class, and under the guidance of one Nate Krasner, I decided to redesign the Trojan Man. I really like the way it turned out. Considering all the directions it could have headed in (see the old cumdumpster image, not present on this fine and wholesome blog), I think i managed a subtle, classy image.

The scan isn't the best (colors are a lot brighter) but what can you do?

we watched some sort of nature documentary involving turtles in my bio class the day before, and man, turtle's heads are really, really freaky looking up close.

Character Development!

So I finally made it into the character development class. Yay! So far I feel like I haven't really done anything worth mentioning. These are two pieces I'm pretty happy with though. I've been practicing at drawing dudes! and also old people! its progress! Mostly I'm excited about expanding the world of my noodle people, cause now some of them have mass and age, and gravity and all that jazz.

This one was for the "team" assignment. But rather than drawinging superheroes like I feel is what the assignment was supposed to be, I just wanted to draw some people gardening. I like the plants, they are fun and I think I want to do more plants like that.

And these two fine people are from the in class "Odd Couple" assignment. B. Ralph thinks they're gross. I find them sweet and endearing.
Eventually both of these will have color in them, but this one especially, that dude is going to have a rocking tattoo.

Vampirella

Thanks to a little bit of a push from Daniel (in that he mentioned it existed), I decided to enter the Project Rooftop: Vampirella ReVamp contest. I'm not expecting much, and the design kind of got away from me anyways. I was going to go back and incorporate some sort of bat-like element, but everything I tried to do just looked messy and or stupid, so I gave up. Whatever, she's pretty cute, and I think those might be the best shoes I've ever drawn.

Other than that nothing new is going on. Except school, where I am a senior which is terrifying. I gave my proposal presentation yesterday, and was pretty much nothing but a big ball of nerves. Everyone said I did a good job though, but they might just be trying to make me feel better, on account of I'm trying to remember what all I said and I don't really think any of it was in order or making sense. At least Whitney seemed to be excited about it, and didn't have anything she wanted me to redo for next week.

Some new stuff

Here are a couple illustrations to accompany "A Dip in the Pool", a short story by Roald Dahl.

Cut paper chapter header. I'm trying to make the silhouettes look like the characters in the full pages. I think this one was moderately successful. its really HARD!

the full page. I struggled with this one a lot, the colors kept coming out all wrong, and I'm still not completely happy with it. It needs more contrast, and maybe a different color somewhere. Its not at all how I had originally envisioned it.

and I've been working on this guy on and off all summer. Theres really no point to it, and the shape ended up looking kind of gross and blobby, but thats okay. Its really just a lesson in tedium. It has some really pretty parts that I'm rather proud of though, so thats good! Its roughly 10"x15".

Finally

I finally took some pictures of the papercuts I did for my Concepts thesis. I'm really sorry that the quality of the pictures aren't that great though. And because the Thumbelina piece I had posted was already finished, I'm not going to bother reposting that one. okay, here you go:

Pinocchio, of course! I was really unhappy with this guy at first. The shapes weren't really showing up, and some of the areas were a lot more prominent than I wanted them to be. I think in the end it turned out pretty good though, I really like the look of the light radiating out.

Rapunzel. This one is such a beast, its huge, and all the little swirly pieces keep catching on EVERYTHING. I'm really, really suprised that the little spire on top has not been torn off by now.

The Juniper Tree. I'm super disappointed with this one. I think the bird turned out great though. It had a lot of potential, but it was the last one I was working on, and I got sick the weekend leading up to finals week, so I just completely ran out of steam, and you can really tell. I had this vision to do this really cool bright colorful landscape in the background, but it just wasn't going to happen. I think I might cut out that middle part someday and redo it. We'll see.

I think the next step in all of these is going to be experimenting with painting my own paper, I'm pretty sure that will make all the difference. I still have this whole senior thesis thing to worry about. Only a month left, and I still have no idea what to do.
I've been tossing a couple ideas around, but none of them really involved papercuts, I think its because I haven't really been working on them at all this summer. I was looking at the Thumbelina piece earlier, however, and I really, really like the way it looks. I like the silhouettes of everything, and I really like the triptych. Maybe I can do something with a series of triptychs?
Kali was saying that fall semester is the time to do the longer term projects, and I was thinking of honing my cartoon style, but if I am taking character development and illustrated book, I feel like I will already be doing that in those two classes. So maybe thesis should be a nice series of papercuts? at least for the first part. Man, I just don't know... advice, anyone?

I also have a couple other things I've been working on this summer, but we just moved and the cables for my scanner are in a box somewhere, I can't find them :/

Nana Projects

So here are a couple pictures of stuff I've been working on recently. I never have my camera with me, so these are just from my cell phone, and we've done lots of way cool stuff that I haven't thought to take pictures of :(

a couple of the magic lantern performances are being reworked for a performance coming up, and they needed to redo a couple of slides, these guys are for a monster parade. (The Purple Werewolf is in there because I love him so much I couldn't help it, Sam)

a skirt I made out of a plastic tablecloth and some vinyl tape. (a demo for costuming for "Parade School Jr." which is a program coming up in the next couple weeks)

This was a costume we made over 4 days during parade school. Its a stilter costume (you can't see it, but the bird legs are really long) I made the neck for this guy, as well as helping to cover his body in fabric, and cut out those feather shapes, and also give him some killer eyelashes (which you can't really see, unfortunatly, but there are pearls on the ends of them!)

yay! Just getting used to walking around on the first day.

Big Girl You Are Beautiful

I drew these ladies in my sketchbook a little while ago, and I finally got around to doing a nice version of them. I was feeling the sexy ladies/fancy underwear stuff recently.
I really like the way they look, its a little different for me, I think, but it looks more like what I want some of my more cartoon-y stuff to look like.

I swear to god that someday I'll get the finished papercuts up here, they're sitting in a flat folder on top of a shelf, and its such a hassle to get them out again :(

Title pieces

Hey Everyone! Its summer, and that means I'm super lazy, so I don't know how often I'll update over the next couple of months.
I finally got around to scanning the title pieces for the paper cuts. They were a little last minute, unfortunately, so there were some things that could have been done better in regards to spacing and whatnot. But leave me alone, I was sick for finals week so whatever. All in all I think they turned out pretty well, so I'm happy.

Unfortunately I've been holding off on posting the finals of the papercuts because I'm nervous about scanning them on my tiny scanner. I'll have to scan a couple of them in a bunch of pieces, and they're so fragile and my desk is way too messy. I'll put them up eventually though!!

also, I started my internship on monday. Its going to be so cool, I can already tell. We worked on this giant spider puppet they had been constructing, and we took it outside to play around with different ways to make it walk and stand and do things. Then helped to finish the body and make it look all pretty.

And in non-art news, I got a cat on Friday. His name is Max, and he is 4 1/2 years old. He is black, and really quiet and friendly. He had been at the SPCA since the beginning of March, which is sad. He seems really excited to be in a house with lots of people who like him, 'specially after being in a cage for so long. I am hoping that once he gets more familiar with the house he will come sleep on my bed with me. We've already made progress in that area!

Bloop bloop

Alright, its been a little while, but I haven't really had anything to post. Still working away on the paper cuts, Rapunzel is finally finished, and I'm working on finishing The Juniper Tree, as well as titles for all of them.
I never did solve the issue of how to display them, so unfortunatly I think they'll just be laid out on a table for crit.

In other news, Frank Stockton took over the Fashion class for the past few weeks, so here are the two assignments for him!
The first assignment was "Something worth shortening your life for" I chose sewer exploration because thats always cool, and there can be death at every turn! (also adorable mice) Its gouache and watercolor, I had fun playing around with the drybrushing stuff, its not something I've really done before.

This one was based on a fortune cookie fortune. Kind of annoying, I don't really like these kinds of things. "Music will play an important part of your future" I was kind of stuck on the listening to music aspect, so it's just some crazy dude sitting in his music library.
Also, moustache alert! I think this might be the first moustache (and beard) I've ever drawn. At least, as far as finished pieces go. I was sort of thinking of Tsar Nikolai II (The last king of the Romanov dynasty) while drawing him.

So thats that, I guess. More later hopefully.

Pinocchio is not going well :(
All the lines are too small, so unless you hold it up to the light, you can't really see whats going on. I spent so much time cutting this, and I love the way it looks, but I guess I'll have to go back in and take every other line out or something. also, I've been cutting a little sloppily on this one, my knife keeps slippint in the wrong directions, and nothing looks as clean as it should. I still have a few more areas that need cut out (like the boat) but I think I'm just going to set it aside for a few days and come back later, hopefully that will help. Plus, I want to get started on Cinderella, which I'm hoping will turn out as awesome as I'm picturing it in my head.

Also, I did this other little drawing today just because. Its not for anything, I just wanted to get away from Pinocchio. I really like orange/blue combos. I almost never use them, but I absolutly love anything that has this color scheme. I also wanted to draw some ghosties. If you think those ghosties look a little similar to the ones that Jordan Crane does (same with the colors..) its prolly on account of they are. I picked up his book o' postcards finally, and I can't stop looking at them.

thats all I got for now. Hopefully I am going to bake some brownies tonight, and then go to sleep early so I can wake up and attempt to register for classes in the morning.

some other stuff

So heres that other stuff I did the past week. I'm not as excited about them, and kind of wrote them off, but apparantly they're not so terrible.
Heres the Shakespeare poster for Sam Weber's last assignment. I chose Romeo and Juliet, and I'm still trying to mess around with watercolors. Sam said this one was a big improvement from the ladyfights, so I'm optimistic. He said he really liked the drawings and idea behind the ladies, so maybe I can redo them this summer and they'll look all nice and good.

In Fantasy we had to take a story and update it in some way, kind of like the Artemis thing at the beginning of the semester. I did Madama Butterfly, and set it in space. Awesome.

Trying out that whole watercolor background and gouache foreground thing.
Here are some super trendy deer girls. They have antlers, speech bubbles, and dotted lines, also big heads on funny animal bodies! It was a dumb in class assignment, so the painting is crap, but I like the drawing, so I might re do it some day.

Rapunzel in pieces

My Rapunzel paper cut is almost done! I've scanned all the separate pieces for your viewing pleasure. The only piece I have left to cut is her face and body. This piece is something like 3'x10" at its widest.
Sorry the scans might not be the best, I didn't really feel like color correcting or bothering with anything like that, I figure I'll just wait 'til I finish the whole thing.
This is Rapunzel's hair. It comes out the window and comes down a few inches past the tower.

These stones were so much fun to cut! its pretty fragile though, and I noticed a couple tears that showed up at some point, which is super annoying. I really like cutting tiny arrows!

this is the background blue color thats going to go behind the stone shapes, also the very top of the tower, which I haven't glued to the rest of it yet.

and these are the brambles that go around the bottom of the tower! fun times all around!

also I did some paintings this week. I guess they're good, but I don't even care right now. Theres paper to be cutting!
I'll upload them eventually, whevever I get around to scanning them and whatnot.

Wall Texture

This is part of the wall texture for the Rapunzel piece. I decided to scan it just in case anything happened to it before I can finish. You know how these things go. Uh.. yeah. I like all the separate elements I have cut out so far, but I'm not sure how they'll look once they're put together. If I end up not liking it, I'll probably just stick to straight silhouettes for a while until I can figure out a better way to layer things.
If it weren't for the big chunk of paper in the middle that I don't need to cut, I'm pretty sure this would have exploded by now.

I really like the way it looks though. Maybe someday in my spare time I'll do something this delicate but even bigger! (and without the paper chunk in the middle)

Ladyfights!

Hi hi,
not so much has been going on lately, but I've been doing a couple exciting things.
In Fashion Illustration, Sam Weber gave us an assignment to do 3 playing cards, well, more just something that showed a hierarchy of some sort, I guess. We've kind of completely abandoned the 'fashion' aspect, which is amusing.
So, after doing this one image over break, and also having just finished reading "Age of Innocence", I decided to do the aftermath of a turn of the century catfight. The hierarchy being least injured to most injured. Fun times all around.
Also, I decided to try and learn watercolor, so these were my first real attempts (I don't count the stuff I did in high school, it was really pretty awful) Sam said that he liked them, and they were pretty good watercolors, but I'm not so sure, as his bodylanguage was kind of saying otherwise. They're all a little pale, but I tried to get them to scan alright. All in all, I really do like the way the watercolor looks with my drawings, so I think I'm going to keep at it and try to keep learning. Also, I got so good at painting scrapes and bruises from this. It was a lot of fun.

also, I'm doing more cut paper for concepts, Its turning out really great, and I love working that way so terribly much. I've been having so much fun with it, and its giving me something challenging to do because working with silhouettes is such a different way of thinking. I'm doing fairy tales, and I'm just using it as an excuse to get some practice in with it, 'cause it takes so long so I haven't really been able to practice on my own during school. Also, a bunch of people are pushing for this to be my thesis next year, I think I might consider it, at least for part of the year or something. I just hope theres enough of a market for paper cuts out there that I could keep doing this for a while.
Anyways, this is the Thumbelina paper cut. Its something like 9x18" it actually didn't take terribly long, maybe like 10-15 hours, which isn't too bad.

thats all for now. I have at least 4 more paper cuts to do by the end of the semester, and some stuff that I'm working on this weekend that I'm so unenthusiastic about you have no idea. Also mundane things like cleaning my room and reading and laundry and stuff. how exciting!

More Paper and also Pattern!

This was for the Words on Wheels thing which was weird and annoying, but I kind of like the tree. Cut Paper, of course.

Also for Concepts, Rebecca had us doing surface design (ooh) except she assigned the topic we had to do (ick) so I was given Hanukkah, which is really, really hard on account of the set color palette and also the limited number of symbols. I like to think I came up with a good idea though, The dreidels form a Star of David shape in the middle, and also look like snowflakes, which works because Hanukkah is a winter holiday. I kind of came up with the idea about 5 minutes before talking with Rebecca and Suzie (I didn't realise we needed sketches that day) so that was nice. More cut paper.

I like pattern, just so you know.

This was based on the movie "21". We just had to draw a sexy lady in clothing/environment that evoked a sense of the film. Its about MIT students counting cards in Blackjack in Vegas. Not really my kind of movie, but I do so enjoy card patterns. Like A lot. A lot a lot.

also, Scarecrow wardrobes!! Based on Erika (the one attracting all the birds) who is a real live person who wears real clothes(and who in real life is actually scared of birds, which I didn't realise at the time D: ), I had to choose another set of outfits that I thought would suit her based on what she was initially wearing.

Taking concepts with Rebecca again. Not sure why, I guess I still hate myself. Anyways, the first assignment was to illustrate a chapter from the Hipsters' Guidebook. I got the chapter on Waitstaff, which I am all to familiar with.

Fantasy?

I'm in this class that calls itself fantasy art, but I'm not sure I really believe it. Whatevs.
This was the first assignment, we had to just show our idea of fantasy. I always think of crazy costuming. I have this book of accessories from around the world, and it had all these really cool veils in it, so I was drawing inspiration from that.

We had to reinterprete the Artemis myth, giving it a "modern" spin. I didn't really do any specific myth, so much as just thinking about how things would be interpreted today. So Artemis likes bathing a lot, I guess, 'cause she keeps getting in to trouble when doing it. So I went for the idea of bathing. I feel like she would enjoy lounging around on an innertube.

This was for a short story called "Roadkill" It was a good story, but I dunno how exciting this image ended up being. We had to make it a central, circular composition, using symbols present in the story. meh.

Finally got to do something that was sort of traditional fantasy related. Just had to do a human animal hybrid, so I drew me some Harpies.

Coal miners! Mules! Canaries!!!

This was for Fashion Illustration. We had to choose a time and/or place, and then find the modern clothing equivalent. So, early 1900's coal miners meet Costume National's Fall 2005 Men's line. Awesome!

also, we had to do this Levi's Denim redesign thing. It was alright, but I kind of like the drawings I did for them.

We had a Day of the Dead show for concepts, and I did my assignment based on those tissue paper banners they have. Somehow I managed not to make any mistakes cutting these out. Each one is about 8x10.

Okay, so these were the first and last assignments from Concepts I.

This one was supposed to be a menu cover, and the image had to be based on an item on the menu. I chose Tiramisu.

and this one was from a dumb exchange with a school in the UK. We had to art direct each other, which could have been really cool. Except that it went pretty terribly.
